Apple introduced the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, marking its first entry into the foldable smartphone category. The device arrives years after Samsung, Huawei and other manufacturers began developing folding phones. Apple’s approach therefore provides a useful case study in how a mature smartphone ecosystem adapts to a different physical format.
The iPhone Duo uses two displays with the same aspect ratio. When closed, users work with a 5.4 inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Opening the device reveals a 7.6 inch inner screen. Both panels support ProMotion, Always On functionality and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. Apple has also used a nano textured surface on the inner display to reduce reflections and make the fold less visible.

Its physical construction addresses one of the main technical problems facing foldable phones: repeated mechanical movement. The frame uses grade 5 titanium. Apple says the hinge contains more than 100 components, while glass layers, adhesives and an internal titanium plate support the folding display. The phone carries an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.
The larger change may be happening in software rather than hardware.
iOS 27 has been adapted around the folding screen. Split View allows two applications to run beside each other. Users can also open two windows from the same application, save application pairs and switch between layouts. Apple says applications including Zoom, Slack and Netflix have already been adapted for the format.
This places the Duo somewhere between a conventional phone and a small tablet. The inner screen is designed for tasks such as document work, communication, video, browsing and multiple application windows. Apple Pencil support is also scheduled for later in 2026, extending the format toward handwritten notes, document markup and drawing.
The processor is Apple’s A20 Pro, also used in the iPhone 18 Pro line. Apple reports a six core CPU, seven core GPU and dual 16 core Neural Engine. The chip uses a 2 nanometer manufacturing process. A vapor chamber handles heat during sustained workloads. Apple states that the Neural Engine provides twice the compute capacity of the previous architecture for local AI processing.
AI is increasingly tied to the operating system rather than functioning as a separate application. Siri AI can use information from messages, email, photos and onscreen content. Apple says some processing occurs directly on the device, while more demanding tasks can use its Private Cloud Compute system.
How Jennifer Aniston’s LolaVie brand grew sales 40% with CTV ads
For its first CTV campaign, Jennifer Aniston’s DTC haircare brand LolaVie had a few non-negotiables. The campaign had to be simple. It had to demonstrate measurable impact. And it had to be full-funnel.
LolaVie used Roku Ads Manager to test and optimize creatives — reaching millions of potential customers at all stages of their purchase journeys. Roku Ads Manager helped the brand convey LolaVie’s playful voice while helping drive omnichannel sales across both ecommerce and retail touchpoints.
The campaign included an Action Ad overlay that let viewers shop directly from their TVs by clicking OK on their Roku remote. This guided them to the website to buy LolaVie products.

The DTC beauty category is crowded. To break through, Jennifer Aniston’s brand LolaVie, worked with Roku Ads Manager to easily set up, test, and optimize CTV ad creatives. The campaign helped drive a big lift in sales and customer growth, helping LolaVie break through in the crowded beauty category.
The camera system contains 48MP main and 48MP ultra wide cameras. The folding structure adds another layer of functionality. Users can frame themselves using the external screen while taking photographs with the rear cameras. The outer display can also show previews to people being photographed.
Battery design is divided between both sides of the phone. Apple rates the device for up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner screen, 44 hours using the outer screen, or about 24 hours when both screens are used equally. Charging can reach 50 percent in roughly 20 minutes through a wired connection.
Price remains one of the largest constraints on wider adoption. The iPhone Duo begins at $1,999 in the United States for 256GB storage. Configurations extend through 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Preorders begin October 16, with sales beginning October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions.
The wider foldable market also remains limited. Reuters reported that industry projections still place foldables below 3 percent of global smartphone shipments in 2027. Analysts nevertheless expect Apple’s entry to increase the category’s visibility and competitive pressure on Samsung, Huawei and other established manufacturers.
The iPhone Duo therefore represents more than another screen configuration. Its significance will depend on whether users find sustained value in running multiple applications, using a larger mobile workspace and carrying one device that changes between phone and tablet functions. The hardware can create that possibility. Actual adoption will show whether the additional screen area justifies the added cost and mechanical complexity.
