As of September 2026, Forbes estimates Elon Musk’s net worth at about $839 billion. This figure places him first on its global billionaire ranking. It is not a cash balance held in a bank account. Most of it is tied to the changing value of his ownership stakes in companies including SpaceX, Tesla, xAI, X, Neuralink, and The Boring Company.

The estimate can move sharply within days. Tesla is publicly traded, while SpaceX and several other Musk-linked firms are privately held. Their values depend on share prices, private funding rounds, tender offers, company performance, and wider market expectations. Different wealth trackers can therefore publish materially different figures at the same time.

SpaceX appears central to Musk’s present wealth. Its value has risen alongside Starlink’s satellite internet business, government launch contracts, and investor expectations around Starship. Tesla remains another major source, although its future valuation increasingly depends on whether it can move beyond vehicle sales into autonomous transport, AI systems, energy storage, and robotics.

200+ Proven Ways to Make Money With AI in 2026

Musk’s longest-running objective is to make human life “multiplanetary.” SpaceX’s stated Mars programme centres on Starship, a fully reusable heavy-lift vehicle intended to carry people and cargo beyond Earth. Musk has discussed uncrewed Mars missions carrying Tesla’s Optimus robots before human missions. These schedules remain targets, not confirmed outcomes. Launch reliability, life-support systems, landing capability, regulation, and cost will determine how quickly progress is possible.

At Tesla, his stated direction is broader than electric cars. The company is working toward a robotaxi network built around autonomous driving software and the Cybercab vehicle. Tesla has begun limited Cybercab rides in Austin, but expansion faces technical testing, safety scrutiny, and regulatory requirements. The business case depends on whether the system can operate safely across varied roads, weather conditions, and traffic environments.

Optimus is another part of this plan. Musk has said Tesla aims to develop humanoid robots for repetitive factory and service work. He has projected very large production volumes over the next decade. Yet commercial humanoid robotics remains early-stage. Reliable hand movement, safe operation around people, battery life, cost, and practical deployment are still unresolved problems across the industry.

His AI effort, xAI, is designed to build large-scale computing systems and AI models. Musk has linked AI development to Tesla’s vehicle software, Optimus, data centres, and future space-based computing ideas. This creates a connected strategy: AI software supports robots and vehicles; energy systems and chips support AI; rockets and satellites provide communications and transport infrastructure.

The scale of these goals explains why Musk’s wealth is closely tied to future expectations. Investors are not valuing only current revenue. They are also placing value on possible outcomes in autonomous transport, satellite connectivity, robotics, AI infrastructure, and space operations.

That also creates risk. A delay in Starship, stricter autonomous-driving rules, a decline in Tesla’s market value, or weaker demand for AI services could change the estimate rapidly. Musk’s wealth is historically large, but its largest components remain concentrated in a small number of high-risk technology companies.

The more useful question is not whether his wealth reaches another record. It is whether these companies can turn ambitious technical claims into safe, repeatable, and financially sustainable operations.
