By 2030, employers expect 39 percent of key job skills to change. That estimate comes from the World Economic Forum’s 2025 employer survey. It covered more than 1,000 companies representing over 14 million workers.

The same research projects 170 million new roles by 2030. About 92 million existing roles may disappear during the same period. That leaves a projected net increase of 78 million jobs.

Technology is changing tasks before job titles

Most technology does not remove an occupation in one move. It changes individual tasks inside that occupation first.

AI can draft documents, analyze data, generate software, and process images. Automation can handle repetitive physical or administrative work. Cloud systems let smaller teams manage operations once requiring larger departments.

This means familiar jobs may survive with different daily responsibilities. An accountant may spend less time entering transactions. A marketer may produce less routine copy. A programmer may write less basic code.

Their value shifts toward checking, deciding, interpreting, and solving harder problems.

AI exposure does not automatically mean job loss

The International Labour Organization studied nearly 30,000 occupational tasks for its 2025 GenAI research. It estimated that one in four workers holds a job with some GenAI exposure.

The ILO found that job change remains more likely than complete replacement. Human input remains necessary across most exposed occupations.

That distinction matters for career planning. People should study which tasks technology can perform, rather than judging careers by job titles alone.

Technology careers are spreading beyond software

The World Economic Forum lists big data specialists, fintech engineers, AI specialists, and software developers among fast growing roles.

Cybersecurity demand is also rising. Information security analysts appear among occupations expected to grow strongly.

Technology connected with energy creates another career group. Renewable energy engineers, environmental engineers, and electric vehicle specialists appear among the fastest growing roles through 2030.

Yet future employment will not belong only to technical specialists. Farming, construction, healthcare, education, delivery, and food processing also show large projected employment growth.

Technology will increasingly sit inside these occupations.

Entry level work is becoming harder

One important change is appearing near the start of careers.

PwC’s 2026 analysis found that skills requested in highly AI exposed jobs are changing more than twice as fast as those in less exposed work. AI exposed junior positions were also seven times more likely to request skills traditionally associated with senior employees.

Judgement, leadership, communication, and problem solving are appearing earlier in career requirements.

A degree still carries value, but knowledge alone may become less distinguishing. Employers can increasingly access basic analysis, writing, coding, and research through software.

People need evidence that they can use knowledge in real work.

A different way to prepare

Career preparation should combine one professional field with technology literacy. Learn the tools affecting your actual occupation. Understand data well enough to question outputs. Learn how AI systems fail, where human review matters, and how security affects digital work.

Then keep building the harder human abilities. Analytical thinking, communication, judgement, curiosity, and leadership remain valuable because technology changes the information available, not responsibility for decisions.
