The company formally launched the phone in China on September 7. Sales began September 9, giving buyers a rare option. It offers a wide display without the hinge, crease, or price structure associated with many foldables.

The Pura X View uses a 6.39-inch OLED screen. Its 16:9.5 aspect ratio is much wider than today’s common 19.5:9 and 20:9 smartphone displays.

That difference matters more than the 6.39-inch number suggests. Screen size is measured diagonally. A wider panel can provide more usable horizontal space despite having a smaller diagonal measurement.

Huawei lists a 2,232 × 1,320 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 2160Hz PWM dimming, and up to 6,500 nits peak brightness. The screen-to-body ratio reaches about 96.1 percent.

The hardware is also unusual for such a thin phone.

The Pura X View measures only 6.68mm thick and weighs about 201 grams. Yet Huawei has fitted a 7,000mAh silicon-anode battery inside it.

It supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. The phone runs HarmonyOS 7 and uses Huawei’s Kirin 9030S processor.

Huawei has also positioned it as a flagship camera phone.

The rear system includes a 200MP main camera with OIS, a 50MP periscope telephoto camera, and an 8MP ultrawide macro camera. Huawei also includes its second-generation color imaging sensor.

The phone starts at RMB 5,999 for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The 512GB version costs RMB 6,999, while the 1TB model costs RMB 8,499.

For now, official availability remains focused on China. Huawei has not announced a broad international launch.

The more interesting story may be what happens next.

Android Authority reported strong early Chinese demand after sales began. It also reported that competing Android manufacturers were reconsidering wide-screen slab designs that had previously been shelved. No detailed industry-wide sales numbers have yet confirmed how large that demand will become.

Foldables are moving in the same direction.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 now uses a wider 4:3 main display. Samsung explicitly markets that shape around video, reading, multitasking, and other content-heavy use cases.

Apple has now entered the foldable market too.

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9. Its first foldable iPhone has a 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch outer screen. Pre-orders are scheduled for October 16, with availability beginning October 23 in initial markets.

That makes Huawei’s move more significant than it appeared in August.

The smartphone industry spent years making ordinary phones taller and narrower. Foldables reopened the question of how much horizontal space users actually want.

Huawei is testing whether that preference can move back into conventional phones.

A wider slab costs less to engineer than a sophisticated foldable. It has no hinge, flexible inner panel, or folding mechanism. Yet it can still provide more useful space for video, games, documents, reading, and side-by-side interfaces.

If competitors follow, the next major smartphone design change may not require phones to fold at all.
