Wi-Fi 7, also called IEEE 802.11be, expands wireless local-area networking. It uses wider channels and links that can work together. Its features raise the network’s potential capacity. The standard does not promise a particular speed in a home or office. The gap between a defined capability and an actual connection is the useful story.

The IEEE amendment defines changes to the radio and access-control layers. It includes an operating mode capable of at least 30 gigabits per second. That figure is measured at the MAC data service access point. That is a technical ceiling within a specified measurement layer. It is not an internet speed that a household device should expect. Radio overhead, signal quality, the router, the client, and the internet connection all shape observed performance.

Multi-Link Operation, or MLO, allows compatible devices to use more than one wireless link. In principle, traffic can move across multiple bands or channels. This can raise throughput or help maintain a connection. Wi-Fi Alliance describes MLO as a feature for improving throughput, latency, and reliability. These are design goals. Results depend on how a router and client implement the feature.

Independent testing shows why that qualification matters. In a February 2026 investigation, RTINGS examined 25 Wi-Fi 7 routers. It reported that 22 used only a minimal form of MLO. Three tested routers marketed as Wi-Fi 7 were not Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 products. The results describe that sample, not every available router. They show that the label alone may not tell users how many links work together.

Certification still has a purpose. Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 means a product passed the Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification process. It helps check interoperability around selected features. It does not mean all optional capabilities are present. It does not guarantee identical performance across devices. The standard itself permits multiple implementations, so a feature name can cover different product behavior.

Channel width is another example. Wi-Fi 7 can support channels up to 320 megahertz. Those very wide channels depend on access to the 6 gigahertz band. The Wi-Fi Alliance notes that the 6 gigahertz spectrum is available for Wi-Fi in some countries. Rules and permitted power levels differ among jurisdictions. Radio support does not mean every band or channel is usable in every location.

The client device matters as much as the access point. A Wi-Fi 7 router cannot create a second link for an older phone or laptop. The client needs matching radio and software support. Even compatible devices need a usable signal on each band. Walls, distance, nearby networks, and local interference all matter. They can change whether a faster channel or extra link helps.

Wi-Fi 7 also includes 4K QAM, which can encode more data per radio symbol when signal conditions permit. Devices may shift to slower modes as reception weakens. Higher rates describe capability, not a constant building-wide speed.

The practical question is which part of a network is limiting a task. If the internet service is slower than the local wireless link, a higher radio ceiling may not change speeds. That includes download speed. If several devices contend for airtime, multi-link support may matter more. If the signal cannot reach a room, a wider channel alone may not solve coverage.

For a technical comparison, check the client and access-point specifications separately. Then verify certification and supported bands. Treat maximum rates as standards-level figures unless a test defines its setup and measurement point. This issue ends with a useful distinction. A standard describes what systems can implement. The room and devices determine what a person experiences.
