Xiaomi’s next foldable phone may put display engineering at the center of its design. A new leak from China claims the Xiaomi 18 Fold will use full RGB displays, reach 4,000 nits of peak brightness, and introduce new protection for both its inner and outer screens.

The specifications remain unconfirmed. Xiaomi has not officially announced the full display configuration. Still, the reported details offer a useful view of where foldable display development is moving.

The most notable figure is 4,000 nits of peak brightness. According to the leak, that level is measured within a 30% display window. This distinction matters because peak brightness does not mean the entire screen can continuously operate at 4,000 nits.

High brightness can still have practical value. Foldable phones often have large internal screens used for reading, video, web browsing, and multitasking. Reflection and ambient light can reduce visibility on these larger panels.

Xiaomi reportedly plans to address this with an anti-reflective film on the internal display. Reducing reflections can improve perceived contrast without relying entirely on higher brightness.

The leak also points to a full RGB pixel arrangement on both displays. A full RGB structure gives individual red, green, and blue subpixels a more direct role in producing each pixel. Depending on implementation, this can support sharper text and more consistent color reproduction.

Durability remains another technical issue for foldable phones. Flexible displays require materials that can bend repeatedly while protecting the underlying OLED panel.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is reported to use a dual-layer Ultra-Thin Glass structure on its folding display. UTG is already widely used in foldable devices because it combines flexibility with a glass-like surface. A dual-layer approach could provide additional protection, although its real-world durability will depend on thickness, hinge design, coatings, and repeated folding tests.

The external screen is expected to use Dragon Crystal Glass 3.0. Xiaomi uses its Dragon Crystal branding for strengthened cover glass designed to improve resistance against scratches and impacts.

The leak also discusses an unusual display proportion. The main report describes a 2:1 aspect ratio for the internal and external screens, while its summary refers to a √2:1 ratio. Those are different measurements, so the exact aspect ratio should remain uncertain until Xiaomi provides official specifications.

A ratio closer to √2:1 would resemble the proportions used in ISO paper sizes. That could make documents and split-screen layouts feel more natural on a large foldable display.

Display technology is only one part of the reported hardware package. The Xiaomi 18 Fold is also expected to use a Leica-tuned triple-camera system and Xiaomi’s Xring O3 chipset. Reports position the chip as Xiaomi’s answer to upcoming premium processors from Qualcomm and MediaTek.

These claims should still be treated separately from confirmed specifications.

The more important signal is Xiaomi’s apparent design direction. Instead of treating the foldable screen simply as a larger smartphone display, the company appears to be working on brightness, reflection control, pixel structure, durability, and screen proportions together.

If the reported specifications are confirmed at launch, the Xiaomi 18 Fold will provide another useful test of how far foldable displays have moved toward becoming practical everyday work screens rather than experimental hardware.
